RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
Freshman second baseman Alden Carrithers and Senior designated hitter David Figoni each tallied two hits as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (22-28, 4-11) fell to host UC Riverside (23-24, 8-7), 13-4, in a Big West Conference game on Sunday afternoon at Riverside Sports Complex.
The Gauchos took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Carrithers reached base on a walk and would later score on a double play.
Trailing after the top of the first, Brett Bigler led off with a bunt single, scoring on Aaron Grant¹s first-pitch double to right center. With one out, Matt Cunningham singled home Grant, then stole second and came home on Andrew Martinez¹s RBI single. UCR continued the hit parade in the second and third as RBI singles by Aaron Wible and Bigler made it 5-1 before Kyle Barratt and Dunbar executed a fine double steal that saw Barratt swipe home.
That would be all the run support Jose Shaw (3-4) would need on the mound, as he went 7 1/3 innings, giving up three runs (none earned) on seven hits while striking out seven.
The Highlanders scored twice more in the sixth and five in the seventh with Brian Steinmeyer driving in all three of his runs on a double and triple in those frames. Dunbar added an RBI double of his own, one of eight extra-base hits for UCR.
Santa Barbara would score three runs in the final two innings. Junior C.J. Cook, pinch hitting for senior right fielder Matt Wilkerson, would record and RBI with a single to left field. Senior Matt Stevens would also cash in a runner with his double down the left field line in the top of the ninth inning.
Sophomore starting pitcher Andy Graham picked- up the loss (4-6) as he allowed 10 hits and six runs (all earned) in 3.0 innings of work.
The Gauchos return home for their final home stand of the season this weekend as they host UC Irvine for three begin Friday at 2: 00 pm.
