RIVERSIDE, Calif. -
Freshman third baseman Matt Aidem went 1-for-2 with one RBI as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (22-27, 4-10) was easily defeated by UC Riverside (22-24, 7-7), 14-1, in a Big West Conference game on Saturday night at Riverside Sports Complex.
The Highlanders banged out 14 hits and got a solid effort on the mound from Taylor Bills (6-7). Bills scattered six hits over eight innings, allowing one run and two walks while striking out six. He did not allow a base runner past second base until the sixth inning, by which time UCR already held a 5-0 lead.
UCR broke open a close game by scoring 11 runs in the final four innings. Jeff Dunbar had his first career four-hit game and drove in a career-high three runs while Nick Salotti had four RBI off a triple and a seventh-inning bases-clearing triple that all but sealed the game.
Michael Martin took the loss for UCSB, dropping to 5-6 by giving up seven hits and five runs (three earned) in 4 2/3 innings. Four Gauchos relieved but could not stop the Highlander attack.
Freshman second baseman Alden Carrithers was the only Gaucho to record multiple hits with two.
The teams will play the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m.
