Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos used a ten-run fourth to defeat the visiting Sacramento State Hornets 17-12 for their second win in the series. With the win, the Gauchos improve to 26-24 overall and 16-11 in the Big West. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 21-32 and 13-14 respecitively.

The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when Ryan Brown hit his fourth home run on the season over the left field fence. They added two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Rick Gonzalez and a sacrafice fly by Mike Butler.

The Gauchos put a rally together in the fourth to end all rallys. In the inning, the Gauchos sent 13 batters to the plate as the inning was capped off by back-to-back home runs by Tyler Von Schell and Jeff Bannon. Bannon, Von Schell and Dave Molidor each had two hits in that inning.

The Hornets proved that they would not give up however. They scored three more runs in the fifth to cut the Gaucho lead to 10-6. Gonzalez was responsible for all three runs as he sent a three-run shot over the center field fence.

The Gauchos hopped right back on the scoring machine in their half of the fifth. They scored three runs, two of which came off a base hit by Molidor.

After scoring two more runs in the sixth and another two in the eighth, the Hornets had cut the margin to 13-10. That would be as close as the Hornets would come. The Gauchos threw four more runs on the board in the eighth. RBI hits by Bannon, Donovan Warrecker (sacrafice fly), R.J. Smith, and another sacrafice fly by Andy Campanella accounted for all the runs in the eighth.

The Hornets could only manage to score two runs in the ninth, which proved not enough as the Gauchos held on for the 17-12 win.

Joe Isaacson picked up his fourth win on the season as he pitched 3.1 innings in relief. Jimmy West started for the Hornets and went 3.0 innings to take the loss. He falls to 5-5 on the season.

The Gauchos will wrap-up their season next weekend as they travel to Cal Poly for a Friday, Saturday, Sunday weekend series. Friday's game is slated for a 5:00 p.m start, while Saturday and Sunday's games are expected to get under way at 1:00 p.m.
