Baseball Battles Back To Defeat Sac. St. 10-9

Santa Barbara, Calif. - R.J. Smith came up in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and the Gauchos trailing by one, and drove a base hit to left field to bring in two runs to cap a five run inning as the Gauchos defeated the Sacramento State Hornets 10-9.
The Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the second with RBI singles by Dave Lusk and Jimmy McFarland. The Gauchos cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when Tyler Von Schell deposited one of his two home runs on the day to left. UCSB then tied the game in the third when Andy Campanella hit a sacrafice fly to right field to bring in Smith who led off the inning with a triple.
The Hornets exploded with five runs in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead. Tim Maghan capped off the inning with a two run home run to left.
The score remained the same until the Hornets brough another run accross in the seventh on a Cory Williams RBI single. The Gauchos offense began to claw away from the seventh inning on. Mike Kolbach drove in the Gauchos third run of the day. After the Hornets scored one final run in the eighth, the tides began to turn for the Hornets.
Reliever Russell Wirth entered the game for the Gauchos in the ninth and shut down the Hornet offense. Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Gauchos needed to play catch-up.
Jeff Carter led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Kolbach and Chad Peshke followed with walkes to load the bases. Dave Molidor then walked to bring in Carter and cut the lead to 9-6. Von Schell then singled to left scoring Peshke and Kolbach and Chris Crawley, who came in to run for Molidor advanced to second. Bannon followed with a bunt single to once again load the bases. After a Warrecker strike-out, Smith took the plate and sent a walk-off single to left, to score Crawley and Von Schell.
Jimmy McFarland went 4-for-4 for the Hornets including one run scored and three RBI. Smith and Von Schell were both 3-for-4 on the day, and Bannon added two hits of his own for the Gauchos.
With the win, the Gauchos improve to 25-24 overall, 15-11 in the Big West, while Sacramento State drops to 21-31, 13-13 in the conference. Russell Wirth earned the win in relief to improve his record to 1-0 while Steve Cuckovich took the loss in relief to drop to 5-2 on the year.
The same two team will wrap-up the series tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. start time. This game will also be the final home game for the Gauchos as they will honor the seniors in a pregame ceremony.
