UCSB Baseball Defeats Pacific 11-4 To Open Weekend Series
May 9, 2003
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Matt Vasquez continued a string of impressive performances as UC Santa Barbara (22-26, 5-11) bounced back from Tuesday's loss to defeat Pacific (25-24, 4-12) on Friday, 11-4. The Gauchos slugged out 11 hits and put together two big innings to move ahead of UOP in the Big West standings.
Vasquez (4-4) cruised through seven innings of work, exiting with two outs, a run in and a runner on in the eighth inning. The junior right-hander allowed only four hits and three earned runs while striking out four and walking two. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
The Gauchos struck for four runs in the fourth by sending nine batters to the plate. Nate Sutton got things rolling with a lead off walk. Josh McCanne singled in Sutton to give UCSB its first run. Chris Malec would later send McCanne home on a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Chad Ziemendorf and Josh Fulton singled to give Santa Barbara a 4-0 lead.
Pacific inched away at UCSB's lead with one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Adam Alverson doubled to give UOP its first hit of the afternoon. After a wild pitch, Alverson scored on a ground out by Nicholas Sekiya. Josh Snook doubled in another run in the sixth and later scored when Malec couldn't corral a two out pop-up at second base.
Santa Barbara once again batted around, this time in the sixth inning. The first three batters reached base, chasing Pacific's starter, Matthew Pena. With the bases loaded, Ziemendorf lifted a ball to the deepest part of the ballpark and into a stiff wind. While the ball didn't leave the park, it was good enough to score Wilkerson from third. Fulton added another RBI single to score UCSB's sixth run. With two outs and the bases loaded. Nic Rodriguez laced a ball into center field. Snook, in center for the Tigers, let the ball skip through his legs, clearing the bases and giving Santa Barbara a 9-3 lead.
After loading up the bases in the eighth, again with nobody out, Sutton delivered a sacrifice fly and Rodriguez collected an RBI single to complete the scoring.
Ziemendorf finished the day 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. His school-record streak for consecutive games with a home run ended at four. He hit one out in all three games at Cal State Northridge and on Tuesday's game at UCLA.
Wilkerson, Fulton and Rodriguez also collected two hits for the Gauchos. Rodriguez led all players with three RBI. Wilkerson, Stevens and Fulton scored twice for UCSB.
Pena (8-7) pitched five-plus innings, allowing seven runs, all earned, on eight hits and one walk. He struck out six Gaucho batters.
Eric Elliott was 1-for-3 with two runs scored for UOP.
Saturday and Sunday's game are scheduled for 1:00 pm at Caesar Uyesaka stadium. Michael Martin (2-2, 6.93) will get the start on Saturday for Santa Barbara. Pacific will throw junior right-hander Sergio Silva (4-7, 5.10).
