SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior catcher Matt Kalafatis went 2-for-4 with a run scored and junior left fielder C.J. Cook went 1-for-2 with two runs scored as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (21-26, 3-9) was defeated by 10th-ranked Long Beach State in the final of a three-game Big West Conference set. Santa Barbara still won the series capturing an 8-6 victory on Friday and a 7-6 victory on Saturday.
Gaucho starting pitcher Andy Graham received a no-decision as he tossed 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (all earned) while striking out two.
The Beach took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning as designated hitter Cole Jacobsen, center fielder Sean Boatright and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki all tallied RBI.
UCSB would cut the 49er lead down to one run in the bottom of fifth as Cook scored on a wild pitch by LBSU starting pitcher Jared Hughes and senior designated hitter David Figoni drove in Kalafatis with an RBI-groundout.
The Gauchos would pull even with Long Beach State as Cook, who drew a walk to get aboard, would score on double down the left field line by Kalafatis and a fielding error by 49er left fielder Danny Mochny.
LBSU would squeeze ahead 4-3 with an RBI-single by Tulowitzki in the top of the ninth inning.
Senior Loren Fraser would make his first appearance of the series in relief of Graham, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings.
Junior relief pitcher Nate Holguin (1-1) was credited with the loss as he gave up the go ahead run in the ninth inning.
"I thought we played well again today. We just couldn't get that one hit to put us over the hump. We pitched well, we hit well and we didn't make an error all weekend," said head Coach Bob Brontsema.
The Gauchos return to action next weekend as they hit the road and play UC Riverside for a three-game Big West Conference set beginning Friday at 7:00 pm.
