Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Long Beach State scored three runs in the fourth inning and then piled up six in the fifth, enroute to a 10-4 victory over 25th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium

The 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Gauchos tied the score in the third inning before Long Beach exploded for nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings. UCSB could only muster four runs and nine hits off of three 49er pitchers. Starter Jeff Baumbeck went five innings, scattering eight of the Gaucho hits, to improve to 3-1.

UCSB starter Jim Bullard was tagged for seven earned runs in his four innings of work. He allowed ten hits in dropping to 7-3 on the year.

Offensively, the Gauchos could never get a real rally going. They scored one run in four innings, but never more than that. They were paced by designated hitter Mike Kolbach who went 3-for-5. Center fielder Skip Schumaker had a pair of hits. Right fielder Ryan Spilborghs collected a single in four at bats, extending his school-record hitting streak to 26 games in a row.

Long Beach State was paced by right fielder Paul Macaluso who was 3-for-5, with three runs scored and three RBI. Shortstop Bobby Crosby was 3-for-4, while two other 49ers had a pair of hits.

The loss in the final game of the three game series, drops the Gauchos to 35-12 overall and 9-3 in the Big West. Long Beach is now 30-18 and 7-5, two games back of UCSB. With Cal State Fullerton defeating Cal Poly today, completing a sweep of that three game set, the Gauchos are now two games behind the Titans in the league standings.

Santa Barbara will return to the diamond next week for a showdown with the first place Titans. The teams will play three games at Titan Field beginning on Friday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m.
