Baseball Swept By UC Riverside With 9-5 Loss

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Riverside (27-21, 7-8 BWC) brought out the brooms, sweeping UC Santa Barbara (17-29, 3-13 BWC) with a 9-5 Big West Conference win, Sunday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Highlander starter Matt Theissen settled down after the third inning, holding the Gauchos scoreless in his final four innings pitched. Thiessen improves to 5-1 after striking out 11 in seven innings of work. Julio Fernandez pitched two innings of shutout ball in relief.
Matt Moran (1-3) takes the loss for the Gauchos, giving up seven runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Eric Posthumus (Santa Clarita, Calif.) came in to relieve Moran in the third, and held UC Riverside to two runs in 4.1 innings pitched while striking out five. James Dayley (Paul, Idaho.) went the final 2.1 innings, striking out three.
Down 5-0 after the top of the second inning, the Gauchos rebounded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, to trail 5-4. Matt Wilkerson (Trabuco Hills, Calif.) hit his 15th homer of the season for the Gauchos, and James Garcia (Torrance, Calif.) connected for his first as a Gaucho, on a three run shot over the center field fence.
After Ryan Spilborghs' 13th home run of the season in the third inning, the Gaucho offense shut down, failing to score the rest of the game, while the Highlanders put up four more runs.
Brian Wahlbrink led the way offensively for UC Riverside, smacking his second homer of the season, going 2-for-5 with three RBI. Tim Faulkner also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a double.
Spilborghs and Wilkerson both had two hits apiece to pace the Gauchos. Garcia led the way with three RBI.
Wilkerson's home run is a new Big West Conference record for home runs by a freshman.
For the third straight game, the Gauchos failed to get ten hits, batting .221 in the series.
The Gauchos return to action next weekend at Pacific and return to Caesar Uyesaka stadium May 17-19 to face Sacramento State for their final home stand.
