SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - For the second straight day, the UC Santa Barbara (17-28, 3-11 BWC) offense was held in check by UC Riverside's (26-21, 6-8 BWC) pitching, losing 3-2 in a Big West Conference game Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

Highlander starter Chris Smith (8-6) tossed a complete game six-hitter, shutting down the Gaucho offense after giving up two runs in the second inning. Smith also had nine strikeouts in the game.

Gaucho starter Sean Thompson (2-3) also pitched effectively for the Gauchos, but did not get enough run support to win. The junior lefty from Redondo Beach, Calif., pitched eight-plus innings yielding three runs while striking out five. Eric Posthumus (Santa Clarita, Calif.) pitched his way out of a bases loaded situation in the ninth, in relief.

Both teams scored two runs apiece in the second inning, but UC Riverside was able to score the deciding run in the third inning, when Scott Powis stole third base and catcher Taylor Vogt's (Burlingame, Calif.) throw went into left field to score Powis. The shortstop also led the Highlanders at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and two stolen bases.

Gauchos third baseman and Riverside Poly High School graduate, Matt Stevens, led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with the lone RBI in his first start of the season at third base.

The Gauchos have now lost six consecutive Big West games.

UCSB and UC Riverside will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Caesar Uyeska Stadium.
