Baseball Stymied By Titans Again To Fall Four Games Out Of First Place
April 29, 2000
Fullerton, Calif. - The Gauchos fell once again to the Cal State Fullerton Titans 4-1 in game two of a three-game series in Big West competition. The Gauchos fall to 21-21 overall and 11-9 in the Big West while the Titans improve their 16th ranked record to 27-14, 15-5 in the Big West.
The Gauchos were not without chances throughout the game. The offense game up to bat with runners in scoring position in four of the nine innings. They only managed to score one run in the third when Chad Peshke came up the plate with the bases loaded and gounded into a fielder choice. That would be the lone Gaucho run on the evening as the Titan pitchers, Jon Smith and Kirk Saarloos combined for ten strikeouts and only four Gaucho hits.
Smith earned his seventh win on the season and Saarloos picked up his fourth save.
Jeremy Sugarman pitched well for the Gauchos as he took the loss (2-4), going six innings, allowing only one earned run (but four runs total), striking out one and walking four. Joe Isaacson came in relief again and pitched two scorless innings. In his last four outings, he has thrown eight innings of scoreless ball.
The Gauchos fall one more game behind the first place Titans and now find themselves four games behind. They will finish the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and then the Gauchos will travel to New Mexico to battle New Mexico State Aggies next weekend in continued Big West play.
