SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Senior right fielder Matt Wilkerson and senior second baseman David Figoni each homer as the UC Santa Barbara baseball team (19-21, 1-5) falls to Cal Poly 13-10 in a conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Cal Poly swung hot bats as right fielder Jimmy Van Ostrand, designated hitter JJ Owen and first baseman Brett all hit home runs, helping the Mustangs tally 13 runs off 14 hits.
Senior second baseman Figoni hit his fourth home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving the Gauchos an early 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Wilkerson grabbed a hold of the No. 2 slot on the career UCSB home runs list as he hit a solo shot (9) over right field fence. Wilkerson now has 38 career home runs and is three round-trippers shy of catching current home run king Dave Willis. The Santa Margarita, Calif., native finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Junior first baseman Bill Rowe also recorded a multi-RBI game as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
Junior starting pitcher Steve Morlock (4-6) picked-up the loss as he tossed 3.2 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs (six earned) while striking out three.
Senior relief pitcher Alex McRobbie was sensational out of the bullpen as he struck out five Mustangs in 2.1 innings of work.
Cal Poly pitcher Bud Norris (4-0) is credited with the win as he hurled 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and four runs (all earned).
Santa Barbara returns to action next weekend as it heads down to play defending national champion Cal State Fullerton in a three-game set beginning Friday at 7:00 pm. Saturday's game is slated for a 6:00 start and Sunday's series finale begins at 1:00 pm.
