SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - 14th-Ranked Cal State Fullerton (27-12, 10-2 BWC) brought out the broom sticks, sweeping UC Santa Barbara (16-24, 3-9 BWC) with their 9-2 victory, Sunday afternoon in a Big West Conference game at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Jordan DeJong (7-2) held the Gauchos to two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, and right fielder Shane Costa concluded a monster series, going 3-for-5 with a double, a homer and four RBI. For the weekend, Costa went 8-for-14 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run to go with four runs scored and five RBI.
Matt Moran (Chico, Calif.) takes the loss for the Gauchos giving up seven runs in 5.2 innings of work. Mike Sutherland (Torrance, Calif.) pitched also pitched in relief for the third time in the series and Jeremy Sugarman (Malibu, Calif.) went the final 3.1 innings, giving up one earned run while striking out two.
Two three-run innings in the fourth and fifth innings by the Titans ultimately spelled doom for the Gauchos, who failed to score after the fourth inning.
The Gauchos led early in the game 2-1, when catcher Taylor Vogt (Burlingame, Calif.) hit his first career home run for the Gauchos, launching a solo blast over the fence in deep right-center.
Fullerton was not to be outdone, scoring three runs in the fourth on Costa's home run, giving the Titans a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
As a team, the Gauchos had eight hits with Dave Licht collecting two hits.
The Gauchos return to action Wednesday when they travel down to Los Angeles to take on perennial Pac-10 powerhouse USC. The following day, the Gauchos will host Westmont to round out their games for the week.
