SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara baseball team (16-22, 3-7 BWC) failed to hold onto a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning, while Cal State Fullerton (25-12, 8-2 BWC) rallied to score four runs in the 11th to win the series opener Friday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The loss spoiled two great performances by the two native Santa Barbara players on the Gaucho roster.
Right fielder Ryan Spilborghs (Santa Barbara, Calif.) smacked his 11th home run of the year in the eighth inning off Fullerton ace Wes Littleton (7.2 IP, 8K, 5H, 2R), that momentarily gave the Gauchos a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the ninth, fellow Santa Barbara High School graduate and UCSB ace, Matt Vasquez, could not hold the Fullerton attack at bay, allowing a run in the inning to knot things up at 2-2.
Aside from the run in the ninth, the sophomore pitched a stellar game, going ten innings while not walking a single batter in the no-decision.
In the 11th inning, the Titans got a home run on the first pitch by Justin Smyres, off reliever and designated hitter, Kevin Miller (Long Beach, Calif.), to make give Cal State Fullerton the lead. The Titans would go on to score four runs in the inning to take a commanding 6-2 lead.
Cal State Fullerton closer Chad Cordero held the Gauchos scoreless for the final 3.1 innings while striking out four to record his fourth win on the season.
David Fisher and Costa paced the 13-hit Titan attack, with Fischer going 4-for-5 and Costa going 3-for-4.
The Gauchos got eight hits with Blair Havens (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and Miller getting two hits apiece.
Both teams did not commit any fielding errors making it the first Gaucho game this season where both team played an errorless game.
UCSB and Cal State Fulleton will play game two of the three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. back at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. Gaucho Lefty Sean Thompson (2-1, 4.47) will face off against Darric Merrell (5-2, 6.06).
