Baseball Drops 10-2 Decision To 17th-Ranked UCLA

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara starting pitcher Jamie Gonzales struggled with his control against UCLA on Tuesday and the Bruins took full advantage of it, scoring six runs in the first two innings and cruising to a 10-2 victory at UCSB's Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

Gonzales walked UCLA's first three batters, shortstop Josh Canales, second baseman Chase Utley and first baseman Garrett Atkins to load the bases. After left fielder Bill Scott lined out to shortstop and catcher Forrest Johnson popped out to Gonzales, he then hit right fielder Nick Lyon with a pitch, forcing in the first run of the game. Designated hitter Matt Pearl then lined the first hit of the game, a single to right, scoring two runs and giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead after one inning.

The second inning didn't go any smoother for the Gauchos. Canales and Utley opened the frame with back-to-back doubles to make the score 4-0. Utley went to third on fly out to right field by Atkins and he scored on an infield single by Scott. Scott then went to third on a wild pitch and after Lyon was hit by a Gonzales pitch, Pearl doubled off of reliever Troy Kinto, plating Scott and making the score 6-0 after two innings.

UCSB got a run back in the third inning when right fielder Andy Campanella was safe on an errort, went to third on a single by left fielder Jeff Carter and scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Chad Peshke.

UCLA scored two more in the fourth and one in the fifth with the runs being highlighted by home runs from Scott and Utley. They took a 10-1 lead with their final tally in the top of the seventh. The Gauchos scored their final run in the bottom of the eighth when Scott Penso had an RBI pinch hit double.

The loss drops UCSB to 17-16 overall. UCLA, ranked 17th nationally, improves to 23-13. The Gauchos return to Caesar Uyesaka Stadium to open a three game series on Friday against Cal Poly. Friday's game will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday's games starting at 1:00 p.m.
