Baseball Loses Rubber Match Against Nevada 7-4

The Gauchos squandered a three run lead against the University of Nevada to lose 7-4 in the rubber match, and fall to 15-14 overall, 5-4 in the Big West. With the win, Nevada improves to 20-12, 4-5 respectively.

The Wolf Pack jumped out to a1-0 lead in the first, but Gaucho starter Jeremy Sugarman kept Nevada at bay through 5.2 innings. The game remained 1-0 until the Gauchos rallied for four runs in the fifth.

In the inning, shortstop Jeff Bannon drew a walk and advanced to third on a single by R.J. Smith. Andy Campanella singled to score Bannon and Smith advanced to second. Jeff Carter reached on a fielder's choice, Smith went to third on the play. Chad Peshke then singled to score Smith and advance Carter to second.

With the Gauchos ahead 2-1 and two outs, Mike Kolbach singled to score Carter and advance Peshke to third. The final run came when Dave Molidor singled to score Peshke and bring the Gaucho lead to 4-1.

Unfortunately for the Gauchos, the pitching staff could not hold the lead as they allowed three runs sixth, and single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth.

The Gauchos were unable to score any more runs on the day, with the final. 7-4. Phil Galer took the loss in relief, and is now 0-1 on the season. Nevada ace, Darrell Rasner, earned the win and goes to 9-1 on the season and Ryan Church earned his second save on the season.

The Gauchos travel north to Stockton next weekend to take on the University of Pacific in a three game Big West conference series. Game times are 7:00 p.m. 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.
