Hawai'i Takes First Half Of Double-Header 8-6 Over UCSB

The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (21-8) defeated the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (9-11) 8-6 in the first game of a double-header at the Les Murakami Stadium Monday. Matt Daly (4-0) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief to get the win while Steven Wright pitched 2.0 perfect innings to get a save. Andy Graham (1-3) took the loss for the Gauchos.
Justin Frash led the way, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, a double and a run. Esteban Lopez added a 2-for-4 game with one RBI and a double while Joseph Spiers went 2-for-4 with two runs, a triple and a stolen base. Derek DuPree also added a 2-for-4 game with one RBI and a run while Robbie Wilder scored three runs.
UC Santa Barbara scored two unearned runs to start off the game, taking a quick 2-0 edge. But Hawai`i responded right away as Frash, Avila and Lopez drove in a run each to take a 3-2 lead after one inning. The Rainbows again put a three-run inning in the second, on a two-run double by Frash and a RBI-single by Avila, making the UH advantage 6-2 after just two innings.
But the Gauchos came up with a four-run fourth inning to tie the game at six. DuPree broke the tie with a RBI-single in the sixth, with Spiers scoring on a wild pitch in the eighth to add an insurance run, making the final score 8-6.
