Junior catcher Taylor Vogt's three-run home run in the seventh inning provided the winning margin for the Gauchos as UC Santa Barbara defeated the University of New Mexico 8-7 in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader. UCSB won the first game of the doubleheader earlier by a score of 11-10.
Vogt finished 1-for-5 with four RBI, including his shot to centerfield which put the Gauchos back on top after the Lobos put five on the board in the sixth and led 6-5.
The home run was Vogt's fourth of the year. Figoni's fourth-inning shot was his first and Valaika's home run in the fifth was his second. Figoni finished 2-for-5 and senior third baseman Nate Sutton went 3-for-5. UCSB finished with 11 hits in the game.
UCSB put three runs on the board in the first with the help of RBI groundouts from Vogt and sophomore Bill Rowe. UCSB took a 5-1 lead into the sixth before the Lobos jumped on Gaucho starter Michael Martin for five more runs to take a 6-5 lead. Martin, who did not win his start for the first time this season, finished after tossing 5.1 innings. He allowed a season-high six runs and eleven hits while striking out four.
