March 4, 2006
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
Brian Wilson was a winner on the mound and at the plate for LMU, as the freshman led the Lions (5-11) to the 2-0 win over UC Santa Barbara (4-7)Saturday. Wilson threw the final 2.1 innings to earn the win, while driving in the winning run with a double in the eighth.
It was the first decision for Wilson, who combined with starter Andy Beal for LMU's first shutout of the season. Now with 18.0 innings pitched on the season, Wilson's team-best ERA moves to 3.00, while his average at the plate improved to .357.
The Lions put their leadoff batter on base five out of the eight innings Saturday. One of those innings was the eighth, when DeAndre Miller drew the walk from UCSB reliever Clayton Edwards. Wilson's double to right center plated Miller for the first run of the game. The Lions then made it 2-0 when pinch hitter Brett Mendoza's sacrifice fly scored Wilson. The sacrifice marked the first career RBI for the freshman.
The Gauchos left 10 runners on base, including four runners on third. UCSB had bases loaded with one out in the eighth before Wilson got pinch hitter Clayton Shank to ground into a 1-2-3 double play.
UCSB starter Brian Tracy (1-2) worked seven innings, but suffered the loss after allowing the Lions' first run.
Beal threw the first 6.2 scoreless innings for the Lions and equaled a career-high five strikeouts. It was the second combined shutout for the sophomore pitcher, who retired eight straight batters during the fifth through seventh innings. Beal had also thrown an inning earlier in the morning, as the Lions and the Gauchos concluded their halted game from Friday prior to Saturday's scheduled game.
Seniors Chris Pettit (2-for-4) and Casey Gordon (2-for-3) led the Lions offensively. Pettit tripled in the second inning, while Gordon tallied two doubles on the afternoon. Senior Erik Johnson also had a double for the Lions.
The game two win sets up the rubber match for Sunday, as UCSB won game one 4-3 in 11 innings. Sunday's game three begins at 1:00 p.m. with Baseball Camper Reunion Day festivities. Campers and their friends and families are invited to arrive at 12:30 p.m. to register for the day's festivities.
