Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (8-4) beat visiting Temple (0-8) 9-1 and 10-4 (7) Saturday to complete a doubleheader sweep at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
In the first game, UCSB used a six-run third inning and a strong outing by senior lefty Rylie Ogle to cruise to victory. The Gauchos were led by leadoff man Jared Schumaker, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. Mike Kolbach, Chad Peshke, Jeff Bannon and Ryan Spilborghs also each had two hits apiece.
Ogle (3-1) went six innings, giving up five Owl hits and allowing one earned run. He also struck out five and walked three en route to his team-best third win of the season. Matt Moran and Russell Wirth came on in relief, to throw two and one perfect innings, respectively.
In the nightcap, a three-run homer by junior Jed Stringham, his team-leading seventh of the season, capped a five-run UCSB fifth, and gave the Gauchos some breathing room. Winning 8-1 after five innings, the Gauchos allowed three Temple runs in the visitors' sixth, before coming back with two of their in the bottom half.
Stringham had a perfect day at the plate for coach Bob Brontsema's team, going 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, two runs and two walks. Peshke added three hits of his own, while Molidor collected a pair of baseknocks.
Southpaw Jim Bullard got the win for UCSB in the seven-inning contest. He went five innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight Temple hits. Rob More (1.1) and Jeremy Sugarman (0.2) were solid in relief of Bullard.
Weather permitting, the teams will play a single game tomorrow, Sunday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m.
