Final Stats

FRESNO, Calif - Fresno State attempted another late rally, but fell short against UC Santa Barbara on Friday night. The Gaucho bullpen looked shaky allowing the Bulldogs to hit ten runs in the last four innings including two home runs from freshman Beau Mills to make things interesting. Junior starting pitcher Steve Morlock picked up his first win of the season and no hit the Bulldogs through five innings.

UC Santa Barbara jumped out to an early lead, as Fresno State starter Eddie Romero had a rough outing, especially in the first inning. Romero walked the opening batter center fielder Matt Emerick, and then allowed two straight singles to David Figoni and Chris Malec. He caught the next batter swinging, but after issuing UCSB shortstop Chris Valaika a free pass, Bill Rowe made the Bulldogs pay with a bases-clearing double. Romero would last just 2.1 innings, and would allow two more runs, one each in the second and third to spot UCSB a 6-0 lead. Matt Scott would come in to finish out the inning, and got David Figoni to ground into an excellent double play from Todd Sandell, Christian Vitters and Doug Fister.

Gauchos starter Steve Morlock started out shaky as well, loading the bases in the first without allowing a hit, but got out of the inning, and cruised through the next four innings, continuing to not allow the Bulldogs a hit.

Freshman Beau Mills started the bats swinging for Fresno State in the sixth however, lifting a homer just over the right field wall to give take away the no-hitter and shutout in one swing. The Bulldogs would score another run in the inning, pushing Nick Moresi around the bases after the center-fielder drew a walk.

Fresno State added two more runs in the seventh, and Beau Mills crushed his second home run on the day down the power alley in right to start off the ninth for the Bulldogs after allowing a run off of a sac fly in the top half of the inning. The team would get two runners on against UCSB's Alex McRobbie, but the Gauchos would shut the door on the Bulldogs to get the 7-5 win.

Figoni had two hits and three runs scored. Relief pitcher Alex McRobbie inked his second save of the season by shutting down the Bulldog attack. Fresno State will face UCSB again tommorrow, in a matinee starting at 1 p.m. at Beiden Field.
