Santa Barbara, CA - The Gauchos dropped to 4-4 as the visiting 16th ranked Loyola Marymount Lions (3-1) won 12-7. The loss is the second in a row for the Gauchos, and the Lions have won their last three contests.
The Lions jumped out in the first inning with a single run, and followed that in the second with two runs, and went ahead even more with three runs in the third. Lions pitcher Billy Traber had the Gauchos in check, as he allowed only one Gaucho hit through five innings.
The sixth inning brought some light to the game, as the Gauchos put six runs on the board to cut the Lions lead to 8-6. Chad Peshke (3-for-5) led off the inning with a double and Dave Molidor (2-for-4) followed suit with a double of his own to score Peshke. Tyler Von Schell (1-for-5) then singled to score Molidor and the rally was under way! Donovan Warrecker walked, and with Jeff Bannons' (2-for-4) single, the bases were loaded. R.J. Smith drew one of his three walks, to bring in Von Schell and add another run to the board. Left fielder, Andy Campanella (1-for-4) singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, but in the mean time, both Bannon and Warrecker scored, and Smith went to third. Chris Crawley's ground out to the second baseman brought in Smith for the Gauchos final run in the inning.
The Lions bounced right back the very next inning with three runs and added one more in the ninth for a total of 12 runs in the game. The Gauchos were only able to rally for one more run in the bottom of the ninth when Peshke doubled to bring in pinch hitter, Dan Kemper, who singled earlier in the inning.
Billy Traber picked up his first win on the season, as Gabe Neboyia drew his first loss for the Gauchos this season.
Weather permitting, the Gauchos will battle the Lions again both Saturday and Sunday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium at 1:00 p.m. If rain cancels Saturday's game, a possible doubleheader will get under way on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
