The Gauchos picked up the first win of the three game series against the visiting San Jose State Spartans, 4-3. The win moves the Gauchos to 3-1, while the loss puts the Spartans even, at 1-1.
The Spartans took the early lead in the first, on a John Fagan RBI single, scoring Junior Ruiz. The Gauchos evened the score in the third when Chris Crawley doubled to right and Chad Peshke brought him in with a single. The very next inning for the Gauchos, Tyler Von Schell was hit with a pitch and then stole second...yes, Von Schell stole second base. Donovan Warrecker's double brought in Von Schell and gave the Gauchos a 2-1 lead.
The Spartans came back the very next inning with a single run, but the Gauchos again evened the score in the bottom half of the sixth. Von Schell hit a monster shot, well over the left-center field fence to put the Gauchos ahead by one.
Again, the Spartans put a run on the board in their half of the eighth to tie the score, and the Gauchos were unable to score in their half. The game went to the bottom of the ninth, tied at three.
Andy Campanella, replacing Crawley in left, reached first on a drag-bunt single. Campanella went all the way to third on an errant pick-off attempt by the pitcher. R.J Smith walked, and Chad Peshke, who was given new life after a miss communication on a foul pop-up, eventually walked to load the bases with only one out. Mike Kolbach grounded into what should have been an inning ending double play, but was botched by the second baseman, resulting in Campanella scoring, to give the Gauchos the 4-3 win.
Gabe Neboyia pitched a great game for the Gauchos. He went seven strong innings. At times he showed some tiring, but fought through it to allow only two runs on five hits. Chris Quiroz entered the game to replace Neboyia in the eighth and allowed one run, to pick up his first win of the season. Tim Adinolfi earned the loss for the Spartans.
The same two teams, square off at Caesar Uyesaka, Saturday and Sunday, both games scheduled to get under way at 1:00 p.m.
