San Jose, Calif. - A four-run rally in the top of the eighth inning wasn't quite enough as UCSB (1-1) was bested 8-7 at San Jose State (2-1) Saturday.
The Gauchos, trailing 8-3, put together five straight hits to pull within one run of the host Spartans in the eighth. A double by sophomore transfer Blair Havens (Orange Coast College), back-to-back singles by Chad Peshke and Dave Molidor, a Tyler Von Schell double and a two-run triple by Ryan Spilborghs helped UCSB after six unanswered San Jose State runs.
The Gauchos went up 1-0 in the third on a Mike Kolbach sacrifice fly which scored Donovan Warrecker. San Jose State came back with two in their half of the inning, only to see UCSB go up 3-2 in the fourth behind a Dave Licht infield single. The hosts then used a three-spot in both the fourth and sixth and held on for the win.
Senior Rylie Ogle got the start for the Gauchos, allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits in five innings of work. Junior Jeremy Sugarman threw three innings of relief, giving up three runs, also on four hits.
Molidor, Peshke and Von Schell each had two hits, good for a second straight multi-hit game for each.
The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
