Baseball Beats Alumni 9-4
Jan. 26, 2002
Santa Barbara, Calif. - The 2002 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos beat a talented alumni team Saturday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, 9-4. Back-to-back triples by Josh Fulton and R.J. Smith capped a three-run fourth as the Gauchos put seven runs up in the final five innings to pull away from the Alumni. Freshman Eric Posthumus and Alex McRobbie combined for 10 strikouts in seven innings pitched.
UCSB led 2-0 going into the fourth when the alumni bats came alive, scoring three runs on on four hits and an error in that inning. Former Gaucho and now Oakland Athletic, Barry Zito capped off the inning with a base hit, knocking in a run. However, Zito was picked off moments after the hit, to end the inning. Zito did not pitch, but the lefty did play shortstop and left field. The Gauchos answered right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to retake the lead 5-3 and never looked back.
Nate Sutton led the Gaucho offense with a three-for-three performance, scoring two runs and hitting a double. McRobbie came in for Posthumus in the sixth and struck out five batters in two innings pitched, including the last four batters he faced.
UCSB will open its 2002 season Thursday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m., against Loyola Marymount, in the first game of a three-game series. Following a day off on Sunday, the Gauchos will host BYU, for a one game showdown. That game begins at 2:00 p.m. also.
