SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara junior right fielder Armani Smith was named the Big West Field Player of the Week after leading the No. 8 Gauchos to a 4-0 week including a sweep at CSUN in conference play, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
The Martinez, Calif. native earned his first career Player of the Week honor after hitting .438 (7-for-16) with four doubles, one home run, four RBIs and three runs as UCSB topped Cal State Bakersfield in a midweek game before sweeping the Matadors on the road over the weekend.
Smith had two hits in all three games against CSUN, with four of his six hits going for extra bases in the series. He tallied an .875 slugging percentage for the week and extended his hitting streak to eight games.
In Friday's big 16-7 win over the Matadors, Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and hit his ninth home run of the season, which ranks fifth in the Big West.
After hitting two more doubles in Saturday's 4-2 win, Smith delivered the game-winning, two-RBI single in the top of the ninth to break a tie game and give the Gauchos a 5-3 win to seal the sweep.
UCSB (36-7) returns to action against Saint Mary's this Tuesday, May 7 at 3:00 p.m. at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Gauchos are also home this weekend with a three-game series against Long Beach State beginning on Friday, May 10 at 3:00 p.m.
