SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara junior left fielder Colton Burns has been named the Big West Field Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday morning.
Burns, a Valencia native, was a dynamo for UCSB at the top of the order last week, batting .700 and reaching base in 16 of his 19 plate appearances. With the College of the Canyons transfer setting the table, the Gauchos went 3-1 last week, including a three-game sweep of Tulane in the team's first home series of the year.
The left-hitting outfielder had a hit and walked at least twice in all four games last week, totaling nine free passes against CSU Bakersfield and the Green Wave.
He started off the week by going 2-2 with a pair of walks in a 2-1 loss to CSU Bakersfield. He then continued his hot hitting against Tulane, going 2-3 with a run, two walks, and a stolen base in the series opener. Burns followed that up with a 2-3 line and four runs scored in a 14-1 Saturday rout of Tulane before finishing up with a double, three walks, and two runs scored in an eventual 6-5 walk-off win in the series finale.
Burns and the rest of the Gauchos wrap up a four-game homestand tomorrow against St. Mary's, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Then UCSB flies to Kentucky for a three-game series in Lexington starting on Friday.
