UCSB Baseball Update: Gaucho Pitchers Dealing While Fredrick, Newell Rake in Summer Leagues

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The 2014 collegiate summer league season has been a good one so far for the 25 participating members of the UC Santa Barbara baseball program, particularly on the pitching side where 11 Gauchos have combined for a 1.86 ERA over 111 innings pitched.

In addition, five UCSB hurlers have yet to allow an earned run this summer while nine have ERAs under 2.00. Gaucho pitchers with spotless earned run averages include Shane Bieber, Hector Lujan, Dillon Tate, Joe Record, and Kyle Nelson.

Bieber has been especially impressive for the Cowlitz Black Bears of the West Coast League, striking out 18 against two walks in 20 innings of work. He is the only qualifying pitcher in the league with an unscathed ERA, and was named the WCL Player of the Week on June 25 after tossing seven shutout innings and striking out 11 against the Kitsap Blue Jackets.

Tate has been reliable when called upon for Team USA, having gone without allowing a run in his 5.1 innings pitched with the red, white, and blue. He is UCSB's first USA Baseball team member since Chris Valaika in 2004. The last three Gauchos to play for the Collegiate National Team (Valaika, Barry Zito, Erik Johnson) all reached the Major Leagues in their professional careers. The 2014 All-Big West honoree's fastball has been clocked at 99 miles per hour this summer.

On the offensive side, four Gauchos have been lighting up the stat sheets in their respective leagues.

Senior Cameron Newell ranks fourth in the Alaska Baseball League with a .373 average while placing second in both home runs (five) and RBIs (23). The left-handed hitting outfielder leads the Matsu Miners in practically every offensive category and has been at the center of an offense that has led the team to an 11-8 record so far.

Sophomore utility man Billy Fredrick has continued his hot-hitting ways this summer, leading the California Collegiate League in batting with a .580 average in 15 games for the Santa Paula Halos. His 1.394 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) leads all CCL players as well.

Senior shortstop Peter Maris ranks eighth in the Northwoods League with a .338 batting average for the Mankato MoonDogs and led the league in hitting as recently as Jun. 30, when he was sporting a .404 average.

Finally, junior outfielder Dalton Kelly has really found his stroke for the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League. The Redding, Calif. native has homered in each of his last three games, raising his slugging percentage to a gaudy .622. He ranks fifth in the league in big flies for the summer.
