UCSB Baseball Unveils its Competitive 2013 Schedule, Season Tickets Now Available
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Head coach Andrew Checketts and the UCSB Baseball team are proud to announce the 2013 schedule, featuring marquee matchups both at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium and on the road against top opponents from around the country, including 15 games against opponents ranked in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll and nine games against opponents who made the 2012 postseason.
The Gauchos will play a grand total of 57 games this year – up from 56 in 2012 – including 29 in the confines of Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. UCSB will play host to a number of nationally ranked teams, including No. 5 UCLA and No. 40 Pepperdine. On the road, they will face tough competition in teams such as No. 12 University of San Diego and No. 23 Cal State Fullerton, and they will also travel to Austin, Tex. to face the No. 21 Longhorns for the first time since 1987, when the Al Ferrer-coached Gauchos took two out of three from then-top ranked Texas.
"We're striving to be competitive on a national scale," said Checketts. "We have scheduled a number of tough opponents, and we don't plan on just using these games as a measuring stick – we will compete with these teams."
With their schedule set, the future looks very bright for the Gauchos. UCSB's current freshman class was tabbed as the No. 12 recruiting class in the national by Baseball America, the best ranking in program history and the highest of any team in the Big West. First year players such as Connor Baits, Justin Jacome, and Robby Nesovic figure to play key roles on the team as early as this year.
At the helm of the program is a "Coach on the Rise" who was recently featured as one of the "Top 10 College Head Coaches Under 40" by Perfect Game. All those factors – combined with a strong nucleus of returning players – should make UCSB a contender this year in the competitive Big West Conference.
In addition, the Gauchos will be hosting free clinics for Santa Barbara youth after every Sunday home game.
