2012 Was a Year of Many Records for Baseball Team
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Under first-year head coach Andrew Checketts, the 2012 UC Santa Barbara baseball team set numerous records and had several players etch their names into the school's history books.
The following is a breakdown, by name, of what was accomplished in a historic season:
ANDREW CHECKETTS
- Set the school record for wins by a first-year head coach
- Checketts, who is also Gauchos' pitching coach, led staff to school record for strikeouts in a season (451 surpasses 428 set in 1984)
- Oversaw two pitchers combine for most strikeouts by a duo in school history
BRETT VERTIGAN
- .381 batting average led the Big West – the first Gaucho to lead the conference in hitting since Bill Geivett in 1985
- Nine triples set a single-season school record and ties him for first in single-season Big West Conference history
- Junior's nine triples are tied for the most in the nation this season
- Reached base in all but one game during the 2012 season – and had separate hitting streaks of 23 and 11 games
- 90 hits ranks fifth-most in single-season history
- Led the conference in hits
- 236 at-bats is eighth in single-season history
- Led the Big West with 17 stolen bases
- His .530 slugging percentage and .454 on-base percentage were both second in the conference
ANDREW VASQUEZ
- His 1.93 ERA led the Big West Conference, becoming the first Gaucho since Justin Segal in 2006 to accomplish that feat
- The 1.93 ERA ranks fourth in school single-season history and is the third-lowest by a starter at UCSB
- The freshman's 104 strikeouts rank fifth in school history and are the most by a UCSB freshman since Barry Zito had 123 in 1997
- His 1.93 ERA is the third-lowest by a freshman in Big West history
- The 104 strikeouts are the fifth-most by a freshman in Big West history
- Vasquez led the conference with a .190 batting average against
- Teamed with Matt Vedo for 216 total strikeouts, eclipsing the previous mark of 212 set in 1997 by Barry Zito and Bryan Noyes
- Was one of 51 pitchers nationwide to be named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame National Pitcher of the Year Watch List
MATT VEDO
- Led the Big West with 112 strikeouts – tied for the third-most in single-season UCSB history
- The senior's 112 K's led the Big West, making him the first-ever Gaucho to lead the conference in strikeouts
- Averages 12.25 strikeouts per nine innings – fourth in the nation
- Teamed with Andrew Vasquez for 216 total strikeouts, eclipsing the previous mark of 212 set in 1997 by Barry Zito and Bryan Noyes
- His .209 batting average against was fourth in the Big West
LANCE ROENICKE
- Set a school-record with his 16 sacrifice bunts this season
- His 18 doubles are 10th-most by a Gaucho in single-season history
- 18 doubles are third in Big West Conference
- His team-high 35 RBI rank seventh in the Big West
BRANDON TRINKWON
- Paced the Big West with his .460 on-base percentage
- Sophomore ranked fifth in the conference in batting (.347) and fourth (.495) in slugging percentage
- His 70 hits were eighth in the Big West
GREG MAHLE
- Freshman was one of only 20 in the nation named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List
- His team-high 35 RBI were seventh in the Big West
- Hit .347, which was fifth in the Big West
