SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara freshman Greg Mahle has been one of the Gauchos' best hitters and pitchers this season and he was thusly named to the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List.
Mahle is one of just two Big West players on the 20-player list and joins fellow freshman Andrew Vasquez on the national radar. Vasquez was one of 51 pitchers to be placed on the Pitcher of the Year Watch List earlier this season.
"Greg is someone who certainly is deserving of this honor," UCSB head coach Andrew Checketts said. "As a freshman he came in with an incredible work ethic and hasn't blinked in any situation he's been thrown in. It speaks volumes to his makeup and his composure, both at the plate and on the mound."
Mahle is hitting .322 with 25 RBI in 43 games and has a .401 on-base percentage. On the mound the left-hander is 2-3 with a 3.48 ERA and has a team-best four saves. He has struck out 39 batters in 41.1 innings.
Mahle, a native of Westminster, Calif., is also one of the nation's toughest hitters to fan as he has struck out just 12 times in 149 at-bats.
