Gauchos Finish Season With 4 Games This WeekendUCSB pitchers Matt Vedo and Andrew Vasquez both have broken into the school’s single-season top-10 in strikeouts and Vedo is just the sixth pitcher in school history to K at least 100 batters in a season. Vedo’s 104 punchouts (currently 5th) and Vasquez’s 95 (tied for sixth) have them just 13 strikeouts shy of tying the Gaucho record by teammates in a season. Barry Zito (123) and Bryan Noyes (89) currently hold the mark in the 1997 season. Entering this week, Vedo ranks fifth in the nation with his average of 11.75 strikeouts per nine innings and Vasquez is 26th at 10.39.

Six-foot-six freshman left-hander Andrew Vasquez leads all Big West pitchers with a 1.66 ERA and his .191 batting average against is third. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. native’s 66 strikeouts are second only to teammate Matt Vedo’s 70. Vasquez has pitched into the sixth inning in all but one of his starts and has struck out at least six hitters in all but one of his outings. Vasquez’s 54.1 innings pitched are ninth-most in the Big West.
