For a group of former UC Santa Barbara football players, the year 1965 was the time of their lives.
It was in 1965 that the legendary Cactus Jack Curtice guided a band of Gauchos to a regular season record of 8-1 and a berth in the Camellia Bowl, the equivalent of the college division national championship game.
Although UCSB lost to Cal State Los Angeles in a game that was played in Sacramento, the memories of that season are indelibly etched in the minds of the men who comprised the team. They were family then, a band of brothers, and they remain family to this day.
In 2008, the 1965 Camellia Bowl Team was inducted into the UCSB Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame, cementing its place in the school’s rich athletics heritage. For this group of proud Gauchos, it truly was, The Time of Their Life.
