SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Continuing with its "Gauchos Give" community outreach commitment, UCSB Athletics is proud to announce it will promote the awareness of Hispanic Heritage Month. The national celebration runs every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
"As such a visible part of this great university we will always engage the community by promoting important diversity celebrations such as Hispanic Heritage Month," said Mark Massari, Director of Athletics. "We have such a great story in soccer and volleyball this year and I'm excited to celebrate this with the Hispanic community."
UCSB is partnering with the Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to distribute 1,000 free tickets to each athletics event during September and October. Tickets are available at select area businesses. For information on those businesses, call Sergio Villa, the president of the Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, at 621-7006, or Evelyn Cabadas at 621-7016.
"In order to truly be diverse, we must learn to appreciate cultures and to celebrate them," said Villa. "I'm honored to be a Gaucho Alum and to see that the Athletics Department is doing a great job at communicating this concept to their staff, teams and the community that they call home.
"The Santa Barbara Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is always pleased to partner with any organization that is willing to promote diversity and cultural appreciation. We are honored to be an advocate for the UCSB Athletics Department and their efforts to foster this same principle within the community."
Games included in the ticket giveaway are: Saturday, Sept. 26 women's volleyball vs. UC Riverside, Saturday, Sept. 27 women's soccer vs. UCLA, and the big, nationally televised (Fox Soccer Channel) men's soccer match against Indiana on Friday, Oct. 2 at 8:00 p.m. The Gauchos lost a heartbreaker to Indiana in the 2004 national championship game on penalty kicks but beat the Hoosiers last year in Bloomington.
As part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the UCSB men's soccer team will face the U-17 Mexican national team on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium in an exhibition game. Tickets are on sale by calling 893-UCSB or clicking here. Admission to the game is free for season ticket holders, including family plan ticket holders, and UCSB students.
Throughout the month Gaucho student-athletes of Hispanic heritage will be highlighted on UCSBgauchos.com. The first Gauchos to be featured will be Luis Silva (men's soccer), Jaimé Serna (men's basketball), Priscilla Perez (softball), and Ashley Ramirez (women's cross country).
Last year UCSB Athletics also promoted the celebration of Black History Month. The national celebration takes place every February.
