On The Mark: Celebrating Facilities Referendum

Mark Massari

Back for another AD Report and I will be trying to hammer one out every two weeks. We have so much energy and information to report on the incredible progress we are making, and how wonderful your Gaucho student-athletes are performing in the classroom, on the fields of play and in life!

Today, I am happy to report the passage of a student referendum that will provide badly needed funds to improve several shared athletics and recreation facilities, including Robertson Gymnasium and Pauley Track. The referendum, sponsored by our partners in Exercise & Sport Studies/Recreation (ESSR), was passed by a wide margin and I am so proud of how our student-athletes came together to support and assist fellow students from club sports, recreation and campus in its passage.

The referendum will provide vital funds to repair what is currently known as Pauley Track, Rob Gym and make future improvements to Storke Fields. Pauley Track will see a new running surface and the installation of lights, seating and possibly a new entrance plaza. Rob Gym will get a makeover inside the main gym area. All together, almost $10-million will go into the renovation and much needed future maintenance of these areas.

I'm asking our donors to consider helping the more than $2 million dollars the campus will now put into repairing and renovating our track and field area. We have had great success when our donors complement a student-funded improvement. A perfect example is our beautiful Intercollegiate Athletics Building where donors helped fund the Phil Womble Hall of Champions, Winnie & Lynn Reitnouer Auditorium, the Dick & Bonnie Jensen Study Room, and now the Jim and Cheryl Barber Academic and Student Success area. These enhancements have done wonders in recruiting and retaining top coaches and student-athletes while serving them daily.

When completed (hopefully prior to 2015) we would love nothing more then to tell the story of legendary Gauchos and introduce the new track complex the right way. To help with the campaign for track and field, contact Andy, Sr. Associate Athletics Director, at Andy.Fee@athletics.ucsb.edu or 805-893-4690.

Congratulations again to all students, our campus and our 500 dedicated student-athletes, led by the army of track and field members who deserve this day and the feeling of success.
