Position: Head Athletic Trainer/Associate AD Sports Medicine

Leroy Heu, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, joined the UCSB Athletic Training staff in 1994, and is currently the Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine as well as Head Athletic Trainer.

Leroy graduated from San Jose State in 1982 with a Bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic training and a minor in biology. He received his Master's degree in health, physical education, and recreation with an emphasis in athletic administration from St. Mary's College in 1989.

Leroy worked as an athletic trainer for the San Francisco 49ers for 5 years (1978-1983).  During the spring of 1983, Leroy became the Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Arizona Wranglers of the Untied States Football League, followed by a return home for a short stay at the University of Hawaii, Manoa as an interim Assistant Athletic Trainer.  The following spring, he returned to the Wranglers in 1984.

Leroy returned to his alma mater in 1984 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at San Jose State University for seven years. He accepted an appointment at UCSB as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in 1991 before returning to the University of Hawaii, Hilo as Head Athletic Trainer in 1992.

Returning to UCSB in 1994 to serve as Head Athletic Trainer, Leroy has been very active in the Athletics Department, including helping with the design of the Harry Callihan Athletic Training Room which opened in 2005. He also served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the USA Delegation Medical Staff at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia in 2009.  He repeated this role for the games in Shenzhen, China in 2011; in Kazan Russia in 2013; and Gwangju, South Korea in 2015.  He was also a member of the USA Medical Team for the 2013 Winter World University Games in Trentino, Italy.

He has been a member of the NATA since 1978 and is currently a member of the Far West Athletic Trainers Association District Convention and Symposia Committee since 2006.  He formerly served as a designated site coordinator and lead examiner for the NATA Board of Certification Examination.  He is currently involved with numerous community service projects.

Leroy resides in Goleta, California while visiting his family often in Honolulu. He is well known around the Athletics Department for his to-die-for barbeque.
