A veteran of professional and collegiate sports, Tom Hastings serves as UCSB's Deputy Director of Athletics/External Affairs. In his role, Hastings supervises multiple sports, oversees the communications, marketing, broadcasting, annual fund, ticketing, video and game management operations of the 20-sport department. He also serves as the department's contact person for campus partnerships and is the day-to-day contact for Learfield Sports.
Hastings came to UCSB in January 2009 after spending nearly
three years as the Associate Athletics Director for Communications
at San Jose State.
In his position at San Jose State, Hastings supervised all of the
department's broadcast services and sports information staff that
coordinated communications, media services and public relations for
all of the school's 16 Division I sports. He also oversaw the
department's video operations, marketing and Internet operations
and handled football scheduling and supervised several sports.
In March of 2007, Hastings was part of the San Jose State team
that conducted the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship San Jose
Regional at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. In 2010, he was the
Tournament Director for the NCAA Men's College Cup held at Harder
Stadium on the UCSB Campus.
Hastings spent eight seasons with the San Francisco 49ers as
communications manager and manager of Internet services. With the
49ers he assisted in the creation and implementation of the 49ers
public relations departmental policies, procedures and operational
guidelines, served as a liaison between local and national media
and 49ers players, coaches, management and staff and helped
supervise the public relations staff.
Following his stint with the 49ers and prior to joining the staff
at San Jose State, Hastings served as the director of marketing and
communications for the National Strength and Conditioning
Association (NSCA) in Colorado Springs, Colo. In that role, he
directed all the marketing, public relations, merchandising,
advertising, sponsorship and Internet operations for the world's
premier credentialing association for athletic performance
coaches.
Prior to his tenure with the 49ers, the UCSB and Santa Barbara
High School graduate served as the Assistant Director of Athletics
Media Relations at UCSB.
Active in the Santa Barbara community, Hastings serves on the
Board of Directors for both the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table
and Santa Barbara PONY Baseball.
Hastings and his wife, Julianne, are the parents of three
children.
