46 Gauchos Named to 2014 Winter and Spring Big West Academic All-Conference Teams

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A total of 46 UC Santa Barbara student-athletes across 10 programs were named to the Big West Academic All-Conference teams for the 2014 Winter and Spring seasons, it was announced by the league on Tuesday.

The inclusion of so many Gauchos highlights the strong committment UCSB student-athletes have shown in the classroom, as well as on the playing field. UCSB boasted an 85% NCAA graduation rate for the 2013-14 year, matching an all-time high and ranking second-best in the academically prestigious UC system.

The men's track and field program led the way with 13 honorees. Women's track and field finished not far behind with eight. Other programs honored included women's water polo (seven), softball, women's tennis (four apiece), baseball (three), men's basketball, women's basketball, golf (two apiece), and men's tennis (one).

To be eligible for the Big West Academic All-Conference team, student-athletes are required to maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, complete one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received (at least a sophomore academically), and compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s competitions.
