16 Gauchos Earn Fall Academic All-Big West Honors
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A total of 16 UC Santa Barbara student-athletes were named to the Big West Academic All-Conference teams for the fall 2011 season it was announced by the league on Friday. The women’s soccer team led the way with six honorees.
To be eligible for the Big West Academic All-Conference team, student-athletes are required to maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, complete one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received (at least a sophomore academically), and compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s competitions.
The six women’s soccer honorees are Allie Ariniello (pre-biology major), Makenna Henry (undeclared), Alyssa Oldham (communication major), Erin Ortega (biopsychology major), Alexa Stringer (environmental studies major) and Cory Yoshida (environmental studies major).
The women’s cross country team had four honorees with Ashley Beechan (pre-biology major), Erin Fabris (pre-biology major), Megan Petkovic (English major) and Sarah Vitug (communication major) each garnering recognition.
On the men’s side, Bhavik Kanzaria (pre-biology) and Nate Cox (literature major) represented the Gaucho cross country team.
The women’s volleyball team had three honorees: Stacey Schmidt (attending graduate school in economics), Chelsea Lowe (global studies major) and Erica Lau (economics major with an emphasis in math).
Junior Machael David (sociology major) of the men’s soccer team rounded out the Gauchos’ fall honorees.
